Historically, New Mexico is, was, and always has been true to its name. Most of the population is hispanic and it is the most 'Mexican' part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo and subsequent Gasden Purchase.
So this is interesting because New Mexico has always been pro 'immigration' from south of our border. There is a privately run facility in New Mexico where their fast-tracking of asylum seekers is being questioned. I thought we always 'wanted' them to be fast-tracked'. Oh, wait, only if fast-tracking' means a different outcome. Oh yeah. The New World.
- Human rights groups criticize a privately operated migrant detention facility in New Mexico for inadequate legal counsel and privacy during asylum screenings, leading to inappropriate deportations.
- The American Civil Liberties Union and other advocacy groups are urging the U.S. government to end its contract with the private company that runs the Torrance County Detention Facility.
- The facility's broken screening system and lack of due process have resulted in low pass rates for initial asylum screenings and complaints of retaliation against migrants.
